What got you into the business in the first place?

I started at a local radio station doing on-air work while in high school & college. I liked it and wanted to stay in the biz, but knew I couldn’t live and eat on a DJ’s salary, so I went into sales for a station in Hurlock, MD. From there I learned media from the ground up. I came to Adstrategies in September 2008.

Who was a big influence in your career?

Lots of people. It seems that just when I needed someone to be there to guide me at a key crossroads in life, someone was there.

What was “your finest moment”, the thing you’re most proud of?

Raising 3 kids that are all funny, witty and smart.

What was your most embarrassing moment in this business?

One time I took a spec spot (demo commercial) to a religious gift shop in Denton, MD. I played it for the owner and asked how she liked it. She said it was great, but her store wasn’t called the “Gospel Shop” – it was the “What’s New Shop”. I had gotten the name of her store wrong.

Is there a great client story you’d care to share?

There are lots, but my favorite involved one of our ACE Hardware clients. We were helping to collect some past-due co-op funds from one of their vendors. A vendor rep had given a verbal promise of additional funds that had not been paid, and in the meantime he had left the company so there was no way to verify the extra funds owed. It seemed that we were out of luck as it was our word vs. his. We didn’t give up though and by lots of digging, found an email in which the rep talked about the money. The vendor paid our client the full amount owed. The client raved about how we could have just written it off, but we went above and beyond to get the job done.

What attracted you to Adstrategies?

As a media rep I dealt with dozens of ad agencies over my 20 years in the business, but none negotiated as hard for their clients as Adstrategies. I knew when Adstrategies called that I had my hands full – to get my piece of the budget I would have to give up a lot to get it. Extra spots, lower rates, free remotes, weather sponsorships. In negotiations, Adstrategies was always tough and prepared. I always felt it would be a good place to work because they took such good care of their clients.

Do you have a method of coming up with ideas and solutions for clients?

I go for a drive. Things just pop in my head.

What makes a great brand?

A great brand evokes a positive mental reaction. You “like” it and feel positively instantly. It’s like a familiar, old friend. Brands that are effectively marketed don’t require much – if any – thought. They make you feel good. Coke. Southwest Airlines. Fox News. Honda. You choose them automatically.

What driving career goals do you still have?

To be the best at whatever I am doing; to serve my customers brilliantly and well.

What talent do you wish you had?

I wish I could reach things on tall shelves.

If you had to live on a desert island, what would you miss most?

Chocolate chip cookies

Is there any food that helps you think more creatively?

Beer.

What’s your favorite sports team?

Baltimore Orioles (oh the pain, year after year)

What frustrates you the most?

People who do not work up to their potential. Lazy, negative people.

What’s your point of view about politics?

That most political types get corrupted by the desire for power and money as soon as they get into office.

Tell us about your pets?

2 dogs and a cat. The cat and I get along the best because he is low maintenance.

What was growing up like for you?

Embarassing. Glad I’m grown up.

What’s your favorite TV program?

I just watch sports, not much into TV really. Who has time?

What do you do for a good time when you’re not working?

Fishing. I’m a history buff and do living history displays.

What are your favorite internet sites

Sports & weather mostly. (Am I boring?)
